FAQs

Q:  Is the Psi Chi membership intake open for Spring 2023?

A:  Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, UBC’s Chapter of Psi Chi will not be reopening the membership application season for Spring of 2023. Please stay updated through our website or social media (@ubcpsichi) for future details.

Q:  Why would I want to join Psi Chi?

A:  Please visit the Why Join Psi Chi tab of this website.

Q:  How do I know if I’m eligible to join Psi Chi?

A:  Your eligibility varies by which class you fall into: undergraduate, graduate, or faculty member. Each class has a unique set of requirements that must be met. To learn more, please go here.

Q:  How much is membership?

A:   The membership fee varies based on the category you fall in. The fee schedule (2017/2018) is as follows: $100 for undergraduate students and alumni, $72 for graduate students and $72 for faculty members. Please note that this is a one-time fee and that your membership lasts for life.

Q:  How is my membership fee determined?

A:  For every new member, $72 goes directly to the Psi Chi home office and those funds support the various opportunities (e.g., scholarships) that you will have member-only access to. Our chapter levies an additional $28 fee on to undergraduate inductees, no fee for graduate inductees and no fee for faculty inductees. 100% of these funds are used to support administration of the chapter and the various initiatives it supports (e.g., chapter awards). We understand that cost is an important consideration in joining, especially while you are an undergraduate student. That being said, we ask you to keep in mind the fact that these funds are being reinvested back into student activities in the department.

Q:  How are the membership criteria determined?

A:   Minimum requirements are established by Psi Chi International and local chapters then have the right to shift requirements as they see fit. UBC Chapter course requirements are notably more stringent than Psi Chi minimum requirements but our GPA standards are the same as other chapters (GPA in the top 35% of students at our university).

Q:  Are there any exceptions if I do not meet all of the membership requirements?

A:   No exceptions will be made under any circumstances. There will be a membership drive once per term and if you currently are unable to meet the requirements, please try again when you are able.

Q:  If I am a transfer student, how does that affect my eligibility?

A:   Please refer to the membership details for your program.

Q:  What if Psychology is my second degree? Do I take my previous degree into account when computing GPA?

A:   If you fall into this category, please consult with Dr. May prior to submitting an application.

Q:  Who should I contact if I have more questions about UBC Psi Chi?

A:   You may contact the President, Vice-President or Faculty Advisor (see the UBC Executives tab).
